Happy Fishing! Here is this holiday weekend's fishing report

‘Bout the same time you’re reading this Santa will be streaking around the world delivering all kinds of fishin’ stuff to those that have been on the nice list. Sure hope I’m on it to give it all a try this coming week with the beautiful forecast ahead.

Big Bend fishing has been on fire as of late. This should continue through the New Years as temperatures are going to remain in the 70’s.

If you’re a salt water fisherman and like to chase redfish, sea trout and sheepshead you’re in luck. All these have been found on shallow flats, creek and rivers. Kind of  depends on the amount of sunshine. I’m fishing closer to shallow rock structure where even the smallest bit of sunshine heats the water quicker.

Anglers are finding crappie in lakes Talquin and Seminole in big numbers. On Lake Talquin, trolling near or in the main river has been working best. The stretch between William’s Landing and Harvey Creek is a great place to start.

Captain Paul Tyre, of Lake Seminole Fishing Adventures, has sent in a special report telling us just how good it’s been. He says, “Lake Seminole in Southwest Georgia is nationally known as a world class Bass fishery, but it has a hidden gem, Crappie fishing! The Crappie fishing on Lake Seminole is good all year long, but the winter months and early spring are exceptional!

Crappie, some of the best eating fish in fresh water, can be caught on Minnows and Jigs. This article will focus primarily on artificial lures, Jigs. My favorite lures for catching Crappie are the Panfish Assassin and Crappie Jigs by Bass Assassin out of Mayo, Florida.  They have an extensive line of panfish lures, but my favorites are the Curly Shad 2” and the Pro Tiny Shad 2”.

These baits are offered in a variety of colors, but a couple of my favorite colors are Alewife and Chartreuse/white. I rig these on a 1/32 to 1/8oz jig head, depending on depth and wind conditions. I combine these with a size 10 open-face spinning reel and 4 to 6 pound monofilament line. When fishing a light bait, the rod, reel and line are important to have the best results. I prefer a Temple Fork Outfitters 6' to 7’ light action rod from their Trout and Panfish line. These rods are so sensitive, I believe I can feel the bite when the Crappie thinks about hitting it!

In the last six weeks, the Crappie bite has begun in earnest. I have had multiple trips with customers catching their Personal Best Crappie, some as big as 3 pounds! I even had one customer land his personal best 10 pound+ Largemouth Bass while fishing for Crappie!

Captain Paul is also a weekly contributor to the Tallahassee Democrat fishing report. For contact information, see Captain Paul’s report below. Whether it’s fresh or saltwater you prefer, be safe, have fun and ALWAYS wear a life jacket while boating.
